Studying with Ritesh

Artistic Director/composer for the Toronto Tabla Ensemble,
Ritesh Das teaches tabla in the traditional
style. Classes introduce and develop understanding in tabla stroke
technique, recitation (the fundamental spoken tradition that goes
hand in hand with the playing technique) and rhythmic theory. Class
levels, which are available from the introductory to professional
levels, allow for the student interested in studying tabla as a
means of relaxation, or those who wish to become professional musicians.
Within our institution, the Toronto Tabla Ensemble is the professional
company, and a number of Ensemble members are also part of our
Teaching Staff.
Teacher to student lineage is an integral part of traditional study
methods. All students have opportunity to study with Ritesh's guru,
tabla master Pandit Swapan
Chaudhuri , on his
annual visits to our institution.
Class Levels and Dates
Class levels vary from beginning, for those with little or no playing
experience, to advanced, for students who have been studying with
Ritesh for numerous years. All students move through the levels
of beginning, intermediate and senior classes on an individual basis.
This allows for each student to progress at their own pace and classes
at all levels are available during each week at the discretion of
Ritesh.
| Beginner I |
No Experience Necessary. Fundamental
study of the tabla including knowledge in the basic strokes
and accompanying spoken language - the oral tradition, and
