Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri

The name Swapan Chaudhuri has become synonymous with the instrument. At age five, a relationship began that would last over 50 years, when he started studying under Pandit Santosh Krishna Biswas of Calcutta. Pandit-ji, a premier exponent in the Lucknow Style of tabla, taught in the traditional one on one manner, and this guru-shisha relationship continued until his death in 1999.
In 1981, accepting an invitation from Ali Akbar Khan to become the tabla master at the Ali Akbar College of Music, he moved to California, USA. Since that time, he has continued in his position at the College, is on the teaching staff of Cal State University in Los Angeles, and has maintained a non-stop international performance and recording career.
